Governance, Risk and Compliance

Most IT risk lives outside of IT

What looks like a technology issue is often connected to how decisions get made, how accountability works, and how the organisation operates in practice.

When those are out of sync, systems don’t deliver as they should, and the same problems keep coming back.

We help organisations understand what’s really driving their technology problem, and address it properly.

What we do

The Execution Gap

Strategy defines the destination. Execution determines whether you get there.

The gap between what an organisation intends to do and what it’s actually able to do is where most plans quietly come apart.

And it shows up in different ways. Decisions take longer than they should, or don’t land as intended. Accountability that shifts depending on the situation. Systems that don’t reflect how the organisation actually works. Projects that deliver something, but not what was expected.

These don’t always show up clearly, or all at once. But when they do, they’re usually pointing to something deeper.

Our role is to understand what’s driving it, not just where the problem appears, but what’s beneath it. That means working across decisions, accountability and the way the organisation operates in practice. Making what needs to change clear, and making sure it holds.

Why Helmsdale

The people you speak to at the start are the people who do the work, there’s no separation between pitching and delivery.

We don’t arrive with a fixed approach or a predefined framework. Each engagement starts with understanding what’s actually happening, and follows that wherever it leads.

The measure of success is simple: the organisation is clearer, more aligned, and better able to operate once we’re no longer there.

Who we work with

We tend to work with organisations at points where something needs to change – whether that’s driven by a specific event, or simply a sense that things could be working better.

Sometimes that’s a transition under pressure: a sale, acquisition, leadership change or restructure where the current way of operating won’t hold up to scrutiny.

Sometimes a new leader has inherited something they didn’t create and needs to under what’s really going on before they can get on top of it.

Sometimes work has already been done – systems changed, programmes run, recommendations made – but the underlying patterns haven’t shifted.

And sometimes, the organisation is functioning, but there’s a recognition that it could be more aligned, more consistent, and easier to run.

We work with owner-managed businesses, large organisations, and public sector bodies. The context varies but the need is usually the same: understand what’s really driving what’s happening, and to address it in a way that holds.
